A comparative simulation study of power generation plants involving chemical looping combustion systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
This work presents a simulation study on both energy and economics of power generation plants with inherent CO2 capture based on chemical looping combustion technologies. Combustion systems considered include a conventional chemical looping system and two extended three-reactor alternatives (exCLC and CLC3) for simultaneous hydrogen production. The power generation cycles include a combined cycle with steam injected gas turbines, a humid air turbine cycle and a simple steam cycle. Two oxygen carriers are considered in our study, iron and nickel. We further analyze the effect of the pressure reaction and the turbine inlet temperature on the plant efficiency. Results show that plant efficiencies as high as 54% are achieved by the chemical looping based systems with competitive costs. That value is well above the efficiency of 46% obtained by a conventional natural gas combined cycle system under the same conditions and simulation assumptions. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Energy and exergy analysis of chemical looping combustion technology and comparison with pre-combustion and oxy-fuel combustion technologies for CO2 capture
Carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted from conventional coal-based power plants is a growing concern for the environment. Chemical looping combustion (CLC), pre-combustion and oxy-fuel combustion are promising CO2 capture technologies which allow clean electricity generation from coal in an integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant. This work compares the characteristics of the above thr...
متن کاملSemi-batch Chemical-looping Reactors Integrated with Combined Cycle Power Plants Operating at Transient Electricity Demand
Chemical-looping combustion (CLC) is a promising process for power generation with low energy penalty and in-situ CO2 capture. In this work, we focus on the integration of high-pressure, fixed-bed CLC reactors with combined cycle (CC) power plants. We deal with the discontinuous operation of fixedbed reactors and the dynamic simulation of CLC-CC power plants, which is nontrivial. Modern power p...
متن کاملChemical-Looping Combustion and Gasification of Coals and Oxygen Carrier Development: A Brief Review
Chemical-looping technology is one of the promising CO2 capture technologies. It generates a CO2 enriched flue gas, which will greatly benefit CO2 capture, utilization or sequestration. Both chemical-looping combustion (CLC) and chemical-looping gasification (CLG) have the potential to be used to generate power, chemicals, and liquid fuels. Chemical-looping is an oxygen transporting process usi...
متن کاملSyngas combustion in a 500 Wth Chemical-Looping Combustion system using an impregnated Cu-based oxygen carrier
Chemical-Looping Combustion (CLC) is an emerging technology for CO2 capture because separation of this gas from the other flue gas components is inherently to the process and thus no energy is expended for the separation. For its use with coal as fuel in power plants, a process integrated by coal gasification and CLC would have important advantages for CO2 capture. This paper presents the combu...
